Dr. Houghton (or “Dr. John”) grew up on the coast of Maine milking cows on his father’s dairy farm, which is where he first gained his love for animals (while surrounded by cows, horses, dogs, cats, and pigs). Pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian, he completed his Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, and later achieved his veterinary degree from The University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine. To further advance his knowledge and skills, and help teach veterinary students, he did a small animal internship at Texas A&M College of Veterinary medicine. Texas is where he met and fell in love with his wife (also a veterinarian), before following her back to her home-state of North Carolina. They made Huntersville their home in 2009. They love it here, and look forward to eventually raising children here as well!
Prior to opening Hambright Animal Hospital with partners at Main Street Animal Hospital, Dr. Houghton worked as an overnight ER doctor for 2 years, then worked in a general practice in Charlotte for 4 years.
Dr. Houghton has a special interest in orthopedics, surgery, and emergency medicine. Some of the advanced surgeries he performs include: extracapsular repair of cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCL/ACL), medial patella luxation surgery (MPL), simple bone fracture repair, femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO), perineal urethrostomy (PU), and many others. Aside from surgery, he really enjoys bonding with his clients, and helping them understand and manage acute and chronic diseases of their pet (i.e. diabetes, epilepsy, kidney disease, etc).
Dr. Houghton and his wife have an energetic dog named Jasmine, and a tolerant cat, Ruby. In his free time he enjoys running half marathons, downhill skiing (he raced in high school and college), spending time on Lake Norman, traveling, hiking, or visiting friends and family. You may see him and his wife working out at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics.
